No MIDI sound in ProTools
G3 400, 256 MB RAM, OS 8.6, ProTools 3.4, OMS 2.3.8, no external MIDI devices (just QT)
I can play MIDI files just fine (with a shareware app called AMP), and I can play audio files with ProTools (at least the demo session it comes with), and I can import MIDI files into ProTools, and even 'play' them (the session 'slider/cursor' moves across the MIDI notes, the level meters move on the tracks, but no sound comes out! I just updated my OMS because I thought that's where the problem was, but no dice. I checked in OMS setup, and it's appropriately configured to use QT as the MIDI 'device'. Any ideas, theories, help? TIA, Kbear |

Re: No MIDI sound in ProTools
I think the problem is that QT MIDI Instruments require the use of the Mac's audio system. This system is not available for any other software while Protools is running.

Re: No MIDI sound in ProTools
Check this setting:
In OMS setup/preferences: 'Use serial DMA driver when available' must be disabled (so NOT checked) ------------------ Arno Peeters www.tapetv.nl |

Re: No MIDI sound in ProTools
Thanks for the suggestions, guys!
Arno - I tried that setting in OMS, but it didn't change the problem... BorgBilly - do you know if I got a sound card, such as the AM III, if that would 'free up' the Mac's audio capabilities and allow me to mix MIDI and audio using ProTools? thanks again, kbear |

Re: No MIDI sound in ProTools
At the suggestion of Lee Marconi, I tried to see if I could get audio out of my MIDI player at the same time that ProTools was open.
I actually did better than that: I was able to playback a PT session at the same time as I played a many-instrument MIDI file, all audio tracks playing simultaneously (it sounded awful, but it did prove the point). But I am STILL unable to hear ANY audio from MIDI files played using ProTools! Any other theories, suggestions, test? Kbear |

Re: No MIDI sound in ProTools
Try going to Options (I think) and clicking on Midi Patch Thru - that should do it.
