MB7-2 is not a multi-band compressor; it just splits the signal up into frequency bands. You still need to add your own compressor. I did a combo of Blue Cat Patchwork hosting the MB7-2. In MB7-2 I have it set for four bands and in each band I can select either an LA2A or 1176 emulation. Back in Patchwork after things are summed all back together from MB7-2 I have a limiter which in this chain is the Blue Cat Protector. Of course in MB7-2 I can go down to one band or up to four; not stuck at four bands.

The problem with this approach is it's way too easy to screw up a track's sound

Avid's Pro Multiband Dynamics sounds really good to me. Easier to use than the old C4/C6, too.

I'd say Fabfilter Pro-MB is a good candidate!

Yes, for multiband comp I'd also recommend the FabFilter. For dynamic EQ I'd recommend the Sonnox. Both are excellent.

I've been using the MC404 and the Pro MB as replacements in the last few days. I've just installed the Sonnox Dynamics EQ and will give that a go this weekend. Thanks to all who replied.

Yes but the original Q was which plugin does both as well as C6

HOFA IQ-EQ? That can do quite a bit if you dig into it.
