Default Recording at 96KHZ for Digital Download and YouTube

Is it important I record at 96KHZ in Pro Tools to distribute as a digital download or to YouTube? Does YouTube even upload at 96khz or is it compressed to 48khz or lower?
For Digital Download some places only except 48 or 44.1khz.
Just wondering if it makes sense to record higher than 48khz. Thanks

The biggest difference I hear is when I use plug-ins and that improvement is retained after a high quality sample rate conversion.

How many people these days are listening to music on high end systems? Most just download on iTunes or Stream online

I'd bet the percentage of people who could actually advance an artist's career is pretty high when it comes to high-end gear. They are who really matter as opposed to "most people."

Once as an experiment I sent a producer a 96kx24 AAC file without telling him what it was. I immediately got a phone call asking what the !@#$ I'd done to make it sound so much better.

But how many people who have iphones etc that are young teenagers or young adults really care if it's in 96khz? That's my market.

I heard the great Mike Shipley say this in an interview once. He mentioned some plugins sound better at a higher sample rate and that's why he mixed higher than 44.1

Your "market" isn't likely to ever hear anything that hasn't been recommended by some curator or reviewer. Word of mouth still rules the music industry.

Nobody cares if it's 96k but they do notice when the sound knocks their socks off. CD is practically dead. The future is files and people can't easily tell what sample rate a file is.
