Default OSX10.5.4 & PT7.4.2 installs jus killed 2 G5 PLEASE HELP.

I bought a G5 dual 2.5 with fresh OSX 10.5.4. While installing PT 7.4.2 (from a digi download) the install froze the system with under a minute to complete. I hard power down because the fans on the machine start to turn into jets. Reboot and the system does not get past the start up white apple screen then freezes AGAIN.... So Im thinkin, wow the cooling system has been corupt or something, call the guy who sells it to me and tell him Im sending it back (as this was already the second G5 he sent me because of courier damage). So I take note and decide to buy ANOTHER dual G5 (computer number 3) from a local guy in a desperate attemp to get the studio up again.

SAME DEAL...Fresh OSX 10.5.4 / Intalling PT 7.4.2 and it gets to the PACE script running with under a minute to go then freezes. I Reboot and now I am sitting here with TWO dead G5's and no idea what to do.

THIS IS URGENT as I have had the studio down now for two days and Im in trouble if I dont get up and running ASAP.

Please help.

Hi,

Simply forget using Leopard on a G5!! Tiger is by far the best and most reliable OS for your computer!

Re-set the PRAM on your G5 (google reset pram) and install Tiger, then use the combo updater for 10.4.11 then install 7.4, then 7.4 cs6

Chris

you should come with Mac OS install disc with your G5. use this Disc boot your Mac. I agree Tiger is still the best OS for ProTools. Good luck

Bobo

Hi,
A complete fresh install of the OS is the only way? as you can not down-grade, so a fresh install of tiger and you will of course need the Mac Tiger install DVD!

The original boot disk was probably Panther! so i recommend you go and purchase tiger!

It was indeed Panther boot discs. Thank you all for the info... Ive been on a stable MIX system for so long I didnt think enough about the upgrade stabilty. Some things NEVER change.

Is the APPLE Store the quickest way to obtain Tiger via a download? ( I have manage to get the G5 running again).

Or will I need the discs?

Again Thanx

I have perfectly working 10.5.4 & 7.4.2 combination running on G5 Quad, so there's nothing fundamentally wrong about neither the OS version nor the Protools version. There must be something else burning your systems; perhaps you have a malfunctioning card installed inside your PowerMac?

Sounds strange, though.

The same Malfuntioning card in two different powermacs? Maybe, but I suspect not.

I am on the hunt for a Tiger disc now (I have 3 sets of Panther, what a waste). Could anyone else chime in who is using a "powermac" , Leopard and 7.4 without issue. I have a challenge ahead to find the correct Tiger disc locally for a powermac.

If I use a macbook Tiger disc will I find more issues? They are pretty easy to come by.

There shouldn't be any real problems using a G5 with Leopard and Pro Tools.

Have you been using the same Pro Tools installer for each of these incidents? If so, it may be that it's corrupted somehow.

How long was the computer frozen before you hard restarted?

Definitely strange - there must be some common thread here. Are you using any shared components - drives, etc - between these computers?

Dear Chris,
I respectfully disagree, we have several G5's with 7.4.2 and indeed I had an older Tiger machine that crashed on a particular session (I think there were some pesky fade files that had been created on another drive but did not come up as offline, but that is another story) I swapped the machine for a Leopard machine and all was well. This was a huge Temp mix with up to 192 Tracks and plenty of TDM plugs. We had no problems whatsoever with this system. My personal Edit system is a G5 2.3 Ghz Dual with 7.4 and Leopard and it has not crashed, as far as I can remember for the last few weeks. I regularly trash the databases on all drives (I have found that if you connect an old drive that has older DB files it can cause problems)
But I agree with Digitechsupport that the G5's have no inherent problems as far as my practical experience is concerned.
my 2c
Simon L.
