Try the Digirack Plugins Guide v7.4 (PDF) page 59 -60. I'm still none the wiser.

When POWr first came out, it was widely praised by a number of top mastering engineers as being the best yet. There are others out there now that are at least as good, but POWr is generally superior to Digi's dither. Try the different settings if you want, but 2 works well for practically everything. Use 1 for spoken word. Use 3 for classical or acoustic where there's huge dynamic range and a sensitive stereo image. Other than that, use 2 unless you're sure you hear a clear improvement with 3.

Your other question is a little tricky to answer. The straight answer is, you need dither any time you're reducing bit depth. If you're going from 24 to 16, you always need 16-bit dither as the last plug-in on the master fader. It recently became possible to make mp3s from 24-bit files. I'm not sure what happens when you do that. It probably depends on your codec. Does it accept the 24-bit file, but truncate it to 16 prior to conversion? Does it make full use of the extra resolution to encode more intelligently? I have tried to find answers to those questions for iTunes, but no luck so far. So, to be safe, I always dither down to 16-bit for making mp3s. YMMV.

What is the benefit of dithering?

i know this is a newbie question, but if my ending bit rate is going to be 16, why not track in 16?

i am assuming that there are sonic benefits to tracking in 24, but not sure what they are?

Be kind...help a newbie out.

Thanks in advance.

You have a completely different question, actually. Try this link:

16bit vs 24bit
