Default External Hard Drive vs. System Drive

I am getting ready to install Pro-Tools LE 6.8.1 for an MBox system on a GAteway 7510GX LAptop. Is it best to install pro-tools on an external hardrive (interfaced via USB) or on the system drive. I was planning on installing the software on the system drive but recording to and storing files on the external drive. Is this the best way to run the software?
