Default Pro Tools LE constantly freezes

Hi everyone. Just joined here. I hate to make my first post about a problem I'm having, but I'm unable to use Pro Tools on my iMac. I can load a song and play it, but after a few seconds I get the spinning ball and I have to force quit. Sometimes I can't even get that far before it freezes.

I have gotten the "you need to restart your computer, hold down the power button" error a couple of times as well. Here is the apple report from the next start up:

I went through the "Optimizations and troubleshooting tips" from Avid but that didn't help. I had similar problems on my last computer, a Mac mini, so I upgraded to this iMac thinking a faster, newer computer would help. But it seems worse now.

I updated to PT 8.0.4, but that was almost worse, so I uninstalled and went with 8.0.3 for now.

Computer specs:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

OS: Snow Leopard 10.6.4

Mbox 2 mini
Pro Tools 8.0.3
External HD: Iomega minimax 500gb

The only other software I installed is Steven Slate Drums LE.

I'm tempted to completely start over but I thought I should ask here first.

Thank you for reading and for any input! Much appreciated.

You probably should update to 8.0.4. How is the external drive connected? USB drives are not supported and firewire drives need to use an Oxford 9xx chipset(911, 912, 924, 934, etc). You should be able to do plenty with a dual core 3GHz

Its a Firewire 400 drive, forgot to mention that. 8.0.4 froze too but I guess I'll try it again and save up for a Glyph drive if thats the problem.
