Given the limitations of ram address, ever thought of trying to run PT10 64bit?

Nope, it's a 32 bit kernel

I believe they went x64 with 10.8 if not 10.7

Well, it seems it was 10.7, because I run a dual-boot setup, and my 10.7.4 system says PID 0 is 64-bit in Activity Monitor.

I found this info in apple support: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT3770
These Macs use the 64-bit kernel by default in Mac OS X Server v10.6 (they can also use the 64-bit kernel in Mac OS X v10.6, but do not use it by default).
  • Xserve (Early 2008) and later
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008) and later
  • Mac mini (Mid 2010)
Here's a strange thing:
My Mac Pro says it's a MacBOOK Pro!
It always did.
Attachment 6037
Anyone seen this before?

I don't think I'm going to change anything.
As long as it works...

Sorry.
I always found it troublesome to attatch graphics here.
This time I tried to use the function represented by a paperclip.

If I try to just drag and drop a simple partial screenshot here, I get the error:
"The text that you have entered is too long (44191 characters). Please shorten it to 30000 characters long."

I put it on Dropbox:

Default Protools 10 with Harpertown (early 2008) Mac Pro?

Yes it will work.

Less Native power than a 2010 or 2012 but it will work.

I had that same machine and for the time it was great, worked great. Ran HD with it, HD9 iirc.

I personally would ask them to put 10.8.5 Mountain Lion on the Install.

10.6.8 would be just fine but 10.8.5 is a new and imho better quicker faster OS.

I mean just the fact that you can resize finder windows on all corners is so much worth it.

SSD support in 10.8.5, I am not sure how 10.6.8 handles SSD’s.

I would also upgrade the GPU to avoid issues with graphics

So is that not the standard graphics card ???

Someone in another thread said the ram bus was slow.

99% of the plugins I use are TDM. I just want my system to be stable and reliable. This is what my PC system lacks and infront of clients that’s not good

You don't want the standard, upgrade it....maybe not right now but if you have issues...I found it was a nice upgrade.

Sure the Ram bus is slow....compared to todays standard even the 2012's were slow...and those are really great machines.

In short the 2008 is a good system, but your money will last longer if you upgrade to a 2010/2012 Mac Pro.

If you can't that's cool too, as long as it boots up i am sure PT 10 will work like a charm.

The first mac I got was that 2008 8-Core system...I had come from a PC as well....and man I was blown away. I didn't turn that system off for months....I just let it sleep when I wasn't using it.....and PT Ran like a dream. Not one hiccup.
