One last thing. What is recommended for trashing your prefs? I go a long time without trashing mine. This was kind of an obscure issue and outside of me picking up on it (and only when asked about the previous takes) I would not have trashed them. Everything seemed to be OK.

Recommended? Never do it unless you must.

If you really have to, prefs are just that, boxes you have ticked or unticked, those can be lost if you have random problems.

I myself do a clean install once a year (thanks Apple for this) and within one year I have never found myself having to trash prefs

Thanks. Its what I thought and what I have usually followed. I've been using HD for the last 10 years and I hardly recall trashing them.
