Quote:
My current mix monitoring set up is: 1) mono Avantone powered Mix Cube. (Handles the majority of mix for me. i.e. Midrange freqs...) 2) Grado RS-1 headphones. Check low end/low mids) 3) ADAM S2.5A's Mostly for stereo placement & FX these days. You could do all 3 of these for just a little more than your budget... Monitoring IS a real personal preference thing...and there are many great near field refs. that I DON'T have experience mixing on... That being said, I DO have a good bit of experience on the following monitors: NS-10s, Genelec 1030 & 1032's, EMES Owl, ADAM P11-As, and Mackie HR 824s. Of all of these, I've found the S2.5's to be the least "flattering". My mixes (In MY Room- another BIG variable) seem to translate more accurately as well. They are also "easy on the ears", which allows me to do long mixes without too much fatigue. On the negative side, after mixing on them for a couple years now, I find the low freqs. (50 Hz-200 Hz) are a little quirky/soft (hence the Grado's). If you're doin' Hip Hop/ Rn'B, these may not be the ticket... AND I find vocal/midrange instrument fader rides easier to do on the Avantone. To be honest, these days, of the 3 tools that I use for mixing, I could do without the S2.5a's the easiest. Lastly, when I set out to purchase my newest monitors, and I had narrowed it down to my top 4, I had a dealer allow me to demo the units simultaneously IN MY ROOM. Not sure if that's feasible for you in your area, but I can't recommend it enough. Hope you find something here useful. Merry Christmas!
