Default Run PT11 now, or wait to upgrade hardware

Hi guys--

I've got a perfectly great working Core2Quad system up and running PT8LE. I already decided months ago that I was going to make the switch to PT11 and the 3930k 6 core beast.

But, I don't have the new MB and RAM yet. I'm making some other purchases right now, including PT11.

The question is: if it were you (and keep in mind that I don't make my living mixing, the q is strictly from a performance standpoint), would you use the existing Core2Quad system with PT11, or would you just wait until you got the new hardware?

Thanks,
Steve

I would give 11 a go, but I would cover my *****. I would pull the system drive completely. Then pop in a blank drive and load 11(and 10.3.7) and have a go with it. By working off a new system drive, you can always pop the old drive in a go back to work if the new setup has issues. For instance, NONE of your current plugins will work with 11 as it only handles AAX 64 bit plugins. Also, depending on the specs of your current computer, there may be other issues(you really want to have Win7(or 8) 64 bit and 8GB of RAM(or more) to reap the potential with PT11. Then, what interface do you have? Does it work with 11?(drivers are now a separate download and install). Do you have an iLok2(11 requires it). Lots of little details to consider

Yah, having a separate drive makes sense.

Q: I know that PT11 comes with the dual license (with 10) but since I haven't paid for 10, is this a gratis thing? I know that 11 is the crossover to 64 bit and the new audio engine so Avid is saying you can run both so you can still run RTAS, etc., but...are they giving that away, is what I'm asking? I guess that sounds dumb since they're giving away the license, but just curious.

I do have Win7 64 and 8G RAM currently, an 003 and iLok 2, so I should be good to go there.

Yes, buying 11 gets you 10, which allows you to use MOST of your current RTAS plugins(if you are coming from LE8, there may be some that require an update). Of course, if you don't have any RTAS stuff now that is "special" to you(like AutoTune or UAD stuff) you may find 11 does all you need right away(and 3rd party companies are jumping onto the AAX64 bandwagon as we speak). The only things I am waiting for are Slate and UAD. Once those are all available for 11, I can move to it full-time

I would be dead in the water right now if I had to rely solely on PT11. For the majority of my (paying!) projects I'm still using 10.3.7. 11 is still just a bit buggy. And sluggish.

Slate already came through with VCC, didn't they? If so, I think that's the last one I was waiting for.

PT 11 will use less CPU than 10, so if you are ok with your track/plugin counts there's no need to upgrade now.

You might be able to get a 8 core in a year for the same price as today's 6.

The Slate announcement sounded like VCC is going to be a while.

Still using 10.3.7 here.
