MIDI needs a reference to play. A MIDI file, as does a MIDI track, does not contain audio.
You need to open a virtual instrument for the MIDI file to play.

Midi is basically a modern day music box, the midi track is your roller with the bumps on it, the VSTi/sound module is the steel comb with the tuned teeth, your sequencer play button is the wind-up spring.
