HI,

listen Gothboy,

either you stay with 5.x and get the tracks you´ll need OR
your get 6.4 with Panther.

Jaguar is about 50% slower than Panther when running apps,
and most OS X upgraded plug-ins require AT LEAST PT6.4
by now.
And almost any contemporary application will need 10.3.9, so there is no
sense at all of running Jaguar.

So, since Dual CPU is supported on 6.4/Panther you may get close to your 5.x
performance since you can dedicate one CPU entirely to PT.

so take your pick.

I said what I had to say,

regs

While initially overjoyed with this response, re-reading this reply causes concern and ajita. What's the point of running 6.4 if all you can get is 6-8 tracks and things are unstable? It sounds like I should go with 6.1 and try it with Panther for a while. If it doesn't like panther I'll have to downgrade to Jaguar. I'll download 6.4 and experiment with it a bit. I don't do a lot of band recording so I don't need a lot of simultaneous ins running but I will need at least 16 tracks overall so I can properly mix synths and vocals. Reason is very stable BTW and the 2.5 version is very light on CPU power.
I never said it was unstable. Quite the opposite actually. It just gradually got slower the more I loaded it up with tracks/plugs until screen redraws became painful to watch, and the spinning beach ball hung around a long time.

This is the unsupported zone so your just going to have to do some experimentation.

I would second the recommendation to avoid Jaguar. That was still a beta OS IMHO. I'd rather use 5.1 on 9 than Jag/6.1.

I bet 5.1 is quite snappy on a dual 500.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the feedback. Very essential and important to me so thanks for taking the time. I would stay with 5.1 and OS 9 if it werent for there are virtually NO softsynths of any kind in RTAS format written for OS9 and 5.1. I'd like to get Reason 2.5 but it needs OSX and PT 6.1 AT Least to run. So I'm going to try to snag a 001 with 6.1 and download the 6.4 update and experiment.

A couple of years ago we mixed an album on a 001/dual 450 on PT 6.something. 24 to 32 tracks with a good smattering of plugs, there were no problems with stability. Did not use any VI's though so unsure as to how that would affect performance. If I recall correctly the machine had 1gig ram.

Cheers,
