Re: advice on what to buy
thanks alot for the advice. I currently have a mix plus. before I bought this I was using a digi 001. about a year ago I took a 16 bit 44.1 mix from my old 001 system and opened it on the mix plus system. I replaced all the rtas (waves) plugs with tdm versions. the difference was like night and day to me. It seemed like the sound field was much bigger and there was much more clarity. comparing sounds soloed side by side I could'nt tell much of a difference but in comparing the total mixes there was a great difference. It seemed like the more tracks I stacked into the mix on the 001 the muddier it got. The same tracks on the mix plus were much clearer. this is what I remember anyways. maybe this has something to do with the hardware? all I know is that im looking for the highest sound quality possible. If the 003 can deliver this then Im definately going to look into it. Im going to look around in the forum to see what others think. thanks alot...

Re: advice on what to buy
The difference you heard was probably mostly due to the difference in the convertors on the 001 versus an 888/24. The convertors on a 192 are certainly a big step up from the 888/24 also, but at your budget you might need to get the 96 I/O, which probably is still a big improvement over the 888/24. I would hope that the 003's convertors are also a big improvement over the 001, and I have been told that the 002's were a big improvement over the 001. Like, I said, the way to level the playing field on an LE system is to get a high quality external convertor like an Apogee Rosetta.
The real proof in comparing final mix results is when you take your mixes away from Pro Tools and listen to them on another stereo entirely, thus taking your PT systems' convertors out of the equation. The convertors in an in the box mixing situation usually only affect the way you monitor while you mix, and don't normally directly affect the quality of your internal mix, since nothing is being converted to analog in the process of making your stereo mix audio file.
