Need Computer Built
Hi all-
I need a recommendation for someone to build me God's own Allenstein. I want a rackmount case, ultra-quiet cooling system, the best (most performance) AMD processor and Mobo, best quality 80(OS) and 120 (Audio) HDs, 2 gigs of best quality RAM, Win XP Pro w/ SP1, a video card capable of dual monitoring, ample firewire (3) and usb ports (6), and a DVD/CD-RW combo drive. I need something that will be guaranteed to get 32+many on the Dave C. test. To be tuned to Digi 002 Needless to say, I'll pay for parts, shipping, and labor upfront. I don't have the time or talent to build one myself. I'd rather get a DUC wizard who needs some extra dough to do it than the thieves at the local computer store. I currently have a Sweetwater Custom Computers rackmount P4 system, and it's Dave C. results are embarrassing. [email protected]

Re: Need Computer Built
EJ,
I would e-mail Nikki-K about some ideas. She has a killer setup and I know that it is a smokin' machine. Hell if money is not a problem, I would look into an Alienware machine. The 4.0ghz is being tested right now. - Doc

Doc-
I'm not saying that money isn't an issue, I just need to find someone who can build computers that wants to make some extra dough.

Re: Need Computer Built
<entering the conversation with trepidation> Well, I built my system from the floor up specifically for my 002, and I get a very good DaveC (32+28 at last count, but I have tweaked since). I built an A64/Asus K8V Deluxe computer based on my research and the experience of the DUC members.
I am not a wire-head, nor do I play one on television ... but I have built 5 computers from scratch, and they all still are working to the best of my knowledge. My A64 system is flawless. You can check out my computer in my profile. I used parts by Adaptec, Western Digital, Corsair, Zalman and others. I'd be happy to talk to you about doing something like this -- unless you are looking for a bona fide "computer builder." |

Re: Need Computer Built
I understand! Love to help out, but I am swamped man! It would take me some time, but would be a pretty sweet machine.
I run this: AMD 3000+ Asus Mobo - a7 whatever board. Forget the specs - standard though 1 Gig of ram 1 40 gig 7200rpm for OS and Apps 1 80 rpm 7200rpm for storage 2 x 80 SATA 150 drives for audio and such GForce 4 Ti 4600 card SB Audigy 2 Platinum card - not really used Firewire card - approved The only thing that is on the MOBO is the 40 gig drive. The other is on a separate Enhanced ATA 133 card and the 2 SATA drives are on the jumpers on the mobo. I get 32 + 8 on that DAVEC thing. Still, who uses that much ever is beyond me, but oh well. I did not do any of the "audio tweeks" either. I run the SATA drives as RAID 0+1 and it works like a champ. WinBlows XP and SP1. The other 3 machines that I have are prett much the same specs, minus the speed. AMD 2400, P3 850 and a P3 450 for my small server. All and all I have had no problems with any of them... knock on wood! I also go to a place local that is accessable on the web called Advanced 2000. Very reliabel place. - Doc

Re: Need Computer Built
It is faaaaaaaast ... but like someone said, once you hit 10-15 aux's over 32 tracks ... jeez! What do you need the extra aux's for?

Re: Need Computer Built
Hi E.J,
Believe me, it's not rocket science. I've carefully chosen the Mobo, CPU and RAM configuration, after I've joined this great forum. Purchased a "populated motherboard" with above parts from a local supplier, who had the best price/extended warranty package and honest sales staff. I've also picked up all other parts from them (details below ) Took me about 2 hours to put it together, a day to configure, troubleshoot and install everything. Will take a lifetime to learn ProoTools... That baby is snappy and had 32+12 Davec with the Mbox. Now I use the 002R, haven't run a test yet. It is solid ( had one RAM failure, got it replaced )and more than I'll ever need. Mind you, I use an HD Accel system for real work at the studio. So...go ahead and try to build your own. There is an unlimited supply of helping advice right here, if you get stuck. good luck... -Antec Solution black quite case w/350w pwr supply -Asus A7V600 motherboard -AMD 3000XP -2X 512Mb Kingston Cas2.5 RAM/PC3200 -Powercolor Radeon 9200SE/128Mb -Adaptec Fireconnect/IE1394/3port PCI -HD1;Maxtor 80Gb SATA;system -HD2;WD 80Gb/8Mb, IDE ; Media -HD3;external USB2/IE1394/oxford 911/WD 80Gb/8Mb, -HD4;external USB2/IE1394/HFS+ for PT HD session xfers -standard floppy/Plextor Premium CDRW -Pioneer DVR 107 -XP home/SP1 *PT LE 6.4 / 002R *WaveLab5

Re: Need Computer Built
EJ...
I have read about your travails, and since my machine is similar -- a Clone-ilon (similar to computer company Digi recommends) I built myself: P4 2.8. 1G DDr ram, Intel 865 motherboard. outboard fire-wire drive. It even has an integrated video card and ethernet on the motherboard, which I keep enabled, and it still runs fine. I will admit I hit a wall with one song that had about 20 tracks, 5 compressors, eq on every channel, Sampletank and Amplitube. But I still think you could do something to salvage your machine. Mine runs stellar, though I haven't done daveC (If someone will briefly re-tell me how DaveC works I will run it and post the results). However, if I could get substanially better performance I might build the Allenstein myself. I built this current computer in about 2 hours and had no problems doing so. But I wouldn't mind turning it into a dedicated video-editing DVD burner. It is so much easier these days to build a computer these days with all the plug-n-play than it used to be.
