Default CPU Spikes in Pro Tools 10, 11, and 12.

Hi,
I've been having this problem on and off for about a year. I go to record, and regardless of the number of tracks, the sample rate, interface, pro tools version (10,11,12), I get CPU spikes up to 100 that either stop the recording or cause clicks/pops in the audio files. I don’t have the buffer set particularly low - 128 samples (also does it with 64 samples and 256 samples - can’t go higher because I’m tracking with musicians wearing headphones), and the CPU usage sits around 2-4% until suddenly it spikes up to 50-100% every 10 seconds or so.

Relevant information:
- Computer info: mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina, 2.3 GHz i7, 8GB of RAM, OS X 10.10.5
- Happens when recording to external USB 3 drive (a variety of different drives) or to internal SSD
- I just did a complete wipe of my hard drive and a clean reinstall of the operating system, installed nothing but Pro Tools 12.3 and the ilok driver, and the problem is unchanged.
- I’m not running any plugins (nor do I even have any installed currently)
- I’m trying to record only 6 tracks simultaneously (though the same problem happens with more or less)
- Happens when using TC konnekt 48 or built-in output
- Happens in Pro Tools 10, 11, and 12.
- I’ve followed all of avid’s recommendations for optimizing mac for pro tools
- My boyfriend has the same computer as I do except 16 GB of RAM instead of 8 GB and a year newer, running Mavericks instead of Yosemite, with pro tools 10 and 12 installed, and this identical problem happens on both versions of pro tools on his computer. Also tried all sample rates, internal/external drive, all above troubleshooting except for a clean reinstall of the operating system on his computer, with no improvement to the problem.
- The problem used to seem like it was isolated to a session, and if I created a new session and imported session data, everything was fine, but this is no longer the case. It happens with every session.
- In reading though other stuff on this forum about this problem, I tried getting rid of the SansAmp plugin, but this didn’t help.

Does anybody have any ideas? I’m supposed to start recording an album today and am starting to think I’m just going to have to buy another DAW…

What USB enclosure are you using and which drives (WD Black, Blue, Red, Green? Seagate?)

What interface drivers are you using, are they current updated drivers??

I've tried a WD "my passport", a seagate "backup plus portable" drive, and my internal SSD.

And I'm using the Konnekt 48 driver version 3.4 (current), but the same problem occurs with version 3.3 of the driver on mavericks. It also is unchanged by using the built-in output.

Man I just now started having these same issues, tonight

My system pegs at 100% but when I look at the usage CPU meter, it's only 1 of the cores showing 100% usage

How about you?

Ah I hadn't noticed that, but I just checked, and you're right - it's only 1 of the cores spiking to 100%.

It's a little extreme but this may help:

Is "Ignore Errors During Playback/Record" checked? If so, uncheck it and see how it behaves.
