Default A scenario and a question.

Using PT LE 7.3
003 Rack
Roland XP-80
Command 8
PC

I retrieve a MIDI file off the internet.
I start a new session in PT and import the MIDI file into my session.
I go in and assign channels / instruments etc on each track.
I have 1 stereo / Aux track setup with the input set to ANALOG 5-6 for my keyboard. My output is set to Analog 1-2.

My question is this. If I want to apply an effect to just 1 channel of the MIDI session, for example delay on track 4, how do I set it up? I don't want the delay to be effective on any other track.

While using AUDIO tracks, there are inputs for each track for whatever instrument / effect you want but not on a MIDI track.

Thx in advance.

The external module would need to support more than a stereo output where you would route each Part to it's own audio channel. If it doesn't support multiple audio outputs you'd need to print them to audio for further processing.

By external module, do you mean the XP-80 keyboard?

Aslo, print them to audio, do you mean bounce each track seperatley then load the files onto an audio track?

thx

Yes. But I'd just Bus Record.

On the XP-80, there is a SOUND PALETTE which has FILTER/ENV, LEVEL, then sliders for CUTOFF - RESO - ATTACK and DECAY. While I have used these fleetingly with another plug-in, I am very green when it come to their operation.
There is also KEY EFFECTS which deals with APPREGIO - SOLO - PORTAMENTO and SOLO.

Can you walk me thru the BUS RECORD idea you stated? If this is too in-depth for you then don't worry about it. I appreciate the help.

Bus Record is standard Pro Tools procedure when recording in real-time either a external sound module or a computer-based instrument (VI) to audio.

You have a stereo AUX Input assigned Analog 5-6.
The Output of the AUX needs to be assigned an available Bus (Bus 1-2).
Create a stereo Audio track and assign the Input Bus 1-2.

Enable Input Only Monitoring and Record Enable the Audio track.
Solo Safe the AUX and Audio tracks, then Solo the MIDI track you want to record to audio.

Check your levels and Record. Now they are ready for further processing.

Elton, if you have the stereo outputs of your keyboard connected to the input of PT, you cannot apply effects in PT to just one "track," since ALL the audio from your keyboard is on just one track in PT. To get an effect on just one part in your ensemble, either:

1. Use your keyboard to apply the effect to the specific patch only; or
2. Record into PT the part you want "effected" separately from all the other parts. Then use PT to apply the effect to that separate track.
