Default Pop Screens Recording Vocals?

Does anybody use these on a regular basis to advise me on the advantages/ disadvantages when recording vocals, especially when trying to get a close intimate sound, all comments welcome,
Thankyou.

AJ

I think pop screens are a must on almost any vocal....especially intimate vocals. Unless the singer is singing way off axis, pops and breath sounds almost always come across when recording vocalists without a pop-filter. And the pop-filter really doesn't compromise the clarity and vibrance of the sound.

Pop filters are great for keeping a vocalist the distance you want from the mic. This is good for levels, reduces the need for a compressor while tracking, and avoids sudden proximity effect. Good for slowing exhalation wind noise as well.

Also great for keeping saliva missiles, breath condensation, teeth, tongue, lips, bubblegum, &c off your Neumann.

In the old days some pantyhose over a wire hanger did a fine job, nowadays you can buy a fancy adjustable clamp.

If the singer knows how to use the proximity effect and is not a screamer, you can place the pop filter closer to the mic.

Really experienced singers back off the mic or turn their heads a little bit when singing plosives (b's and p's), to avoid popping...
