Good sounding vocals start with a good mic, a good preamp, and a good room.
From there, there's not a lot of work to do.
Some compression, possibly some EQ.

I bought smack (compressor) and tl space on evilbay for cheap. They improved my vocal chain alot. I use the digidesign generic eq. i heard the Sony oxford eq is the bomb if you can afford it. Uad cards have excellent plugins also.

Diddo on Good mic/good pre/acoustic

My chain is

Beyerdynamic mc740>Neve Portico preamp>apogee ensemble> pro tools

I just got a se reflection filter for acoustic control. It sounds so much better and clear. I highly reccomend it!

ok let me make my self clear on this. First i do compression on my vocals then vocal deesser, then vocal expander, then eq and finish it off with reverb.
is there a different or better way of arranging these in a different order with different plugins or are these fine to work with. suggestions please on good pro tools plugins and order of arranging them. thanks you guys. well i use the perception 220 from AKG and its just connected to my mbox 2. got a reflection filter and room is acoustically treated.

It's really up to personal preference and the task/sound source at hand that dictates the order of plugins. I often use eq, and then a compressor. If de-essing is needed I'll place it before the compressor. Sometimes I use a subtractive eq, a slow compressor, an additive eq and finally a fast compressor. I pretty much always use reverb on vocal tracks, but the reverbs are instantiated on auxes.

I say train your ears, and learn how it "should" sound. Presets and others suggestions will only get you so far. You have to learn how to recognize what the problem is with a sound or a mix, and then how to best fix it. Took me years to realize this.

Sign me up. My chain is MXL V89>Focusrite ISA-428>ART Pro VLA II(with NOS Mullard tube). Inserts are EQ III for hi-pass>BF76>EQ III for taming the "nasties">SMACK!(or softube CL1B)>Pultec EQ1QA. AUX send to reverb(either TL Space with EMT plate, or IK Classik reverb plate). Sometimes I send to another AUX with a touch of delay(followed by EQ to roll off from 2-3K on up).
