Default OSX Drive Formatting

So we just upgraded to OSX/PT 6.2.3 on a dual boot G4 Dual 1G box. We were using the OS9 side and doing nothing with the OSX side until now.
The 2 SCSI drives were formatted using the Atto Utility in OS9 for the UL3D card and we have been using them under OS9/PT 5.3. In their OSX profile they are listed as "Mac OS Extended", which is what they should be, but we have not explicitly reformatted under OSX. Everything seems to be running smoothly so far, but the Digi instructions specifically state to reformat the drives under OSX regardless.

Anyone been through this and leave their OS9 formatted drives alone under OSX or are there concrete reasons to reformat the drives under OSX before continuing?

Thanks.

dunno about concrete reasons, but I have had troubles reading files from an OS9 formatted drive in PT 6.x for X.

there is this option in OSX Disk utility to add a OS9/classic driver when formatting drives, so these can used under OS9 /witch OSX flawlessly. works here fine.

best

I don't think that is 100% correct. What digidesign says is to avoid formatting under OSX using third party software.

In my case, SCSI disks formatted under OS9 with recent version of Atto utility in HFS extended format, are perfectly recognized and usable under OSX all flavours (Jaguar & Panther)
Plain old HFS, however, is to be banned totally.
