How can I spread the sound left and right with one input?

Is this the typical newbie question of wanting to record a mono source to a stereo track? Mono signals(like voice or the average guitar amp) should be recorded to a mono audio track. Stereo sources like lots of keyboards, would get recorded to a stereo audio track. Lots of newbies think that you need to record everything as stereo to have it playback thru a "stereo" system(like your monitors). Think of the stereo field(your speakers) as your canvas, the sounds you record as the paint, and use the PAN knobs to decide where the paint goes Or have I totally missed the question
