Default Mac Pro 7.1 questions

Hi all,

Will soon migrate from my old Mac 5.1 to the new 7.1 and wonder if someone has any answers to this:

1. On my old Mac Pro 5.1 I have been using the optical out for listening to audio played directly from the computer and since the Mac Pro 7.1 doesn't have optical out I have to find another solution in form of an extra sound card. Preferably PCI but I suppose thunderbolt or USB would work too. If anyone knows of a good and reliable card I would be much obliged.

2. I will still use my old Mac screen 27 inch with mini display port and will need a conversion to HDMI. Been trying to find a cable with mini displayport (female) and HDMI (male) but haven't found any with this set uo so if anyone can point me in the right direction considering this I would be very greatful too.

TIA,

Robert

1-I had success with a Behringer USB-SPDIF box

2-maybe look at one of the thunderbolt hubs as some may have the right connection.

It’s an expensive option but I use the benchmark DAC-1 for my computer audio. It sounds freakin awesome!!

Regarding USB to SPDIF optical, there´s a lot of converters to choose from, just google it and choose accordingly to the price tag you aiming for.

Regarding HDMI, I use a Sonnet Echo 11 that can handle that plus other tasks. Really flexible:
