For your hammer, do you have a monthly subscription? You paid for a lot of versions (with ears, no ears)? You're comparing apples and insects. I hope you're arrested at Pro Tools 6. It was excellent.

I hope you mean PT 6.4 because everything before that was crap and next usable version was PT 7.2

Never had Media Composer or any other video DAW, but I suppose that Avid applies to video stuff the same PT policy. Then my point is still that in long terms this kind of policy is not profitable. Unless Avid want to leave small users and count only on big commercial studios

That's one way to think about it. Another way would be if small user compares everything to Apple's pay 199 once and get updates forever then it may be small users wanting to leave Avid not the other way around.

2018 saw 5 releases and 2017 saw 7 releases. 2016 maybe five, not sure about that. 2015 same thing, maybe five releases.

That is the history since PT12.

Compare to 10 years ago when 2010 saw two releases (PT8.1 and PT9) or three if you count the under the counter PT8.5 that was delivered with HDN just before PT9 launch. Or zero feature releases of 2009, only PT8.0.x bugfix releases which do not really count. Or one release of 2008 (PT8.0). Or one release of 2007 (PT7.4). In 2006 there was two releases (PT7.2 and PT7.3) but PT7.3 is practically PT7.2 with Universal Binaries due to Apple's change from PPC to Intel. In 2005 again only one release (PT7.0) and everything before that is so prehistoric nobody really cares.

So the last five years have seen 5 releases on average while 15 years ago releases were fewer. I'm sure you don't want to go back to PT6 era when Pro Tools was transitioning from OS9 to OSX. At that time there were A LOT of releases for compatibility.
At the end of the 2008 I paid about 150 euros for crossing from PT7 to PT8. And PT8 was the most big revolution since I started to use PT with the 6.7. And in those years we were not forced to renew annual plans with penalities if lapse. I skipped PT9 because it didn't interest me and jumped directly to PT11 (with vs 10 that I used for long time with the HD accel cards).

I don't know what perspective you are looking the music business from but I work all the time, even when I don't have clients I have many things to do on Pro Tools. I complain a lot but I don't sit around. I value my money and don't like wasting it, especially when it's supposed to help me make the most out of my creative moments.

No. We should not give a pass for failure.
