Default latency with audiomedia 3

afte lotsa problems with installing the right drivers for my audiomedia 3 card, it finally works, but ... with to high latency! its not possible to record with 1536 latency and i cannot find a way to change it ... what did i wrong? i dont think that the audiomedia 3 card is that bad ... here's how my audio setup looks:

some further details, i'm using cubase 3.5.2 on mac G3 os 8.6. did i install the wrong drivers or what?
