Default Freeze when "Some paths were made inactive..." message appears (10.3.6)

Forgive my double posting but tried on the PT10 forum already and no response so thought I'd try here

I've just updated to 10.3.6 and the first session I opened the very first thing that happened was a message appeared to say my hardware settings had been changed and PT needs to quit. So I did (saving first) and now on reopening I get the insufferable "Some paths were made inactive because they could not be assigned to existing path definitions" message (which I got in 10.3.5 anyway) but then my PC completely freezes. The CPU/fans audibly increase in activity and the situation is unrecoverable via CTRL+ALT+DEL and the only option is a PC reboot.

Any one have any ideas how to solve this? thanks in advance!
