Default Will 001\'s optical out work as a general G4 sound output ?? Can a real reply come ?

Although this question was raised several times, no one was able to answer it 100 % so far. Even Max Gutnik from Apogee and Brad Lyons promised to check it, but never came back with a reply ...
I am about to buy Apogee mini DAC. I really wonder and do not know whether connecting it to Digi 001 card via optical out will unable me to use 001 as a general G4 sound output and thus enable me to listen music outside PT also through Apogee and my monitors. Now it works when monitors are connected to Digi 001 analogue output.
Is somebody sure whether it will work or not ? Especially PSX-100 owners etc.
If it does not work, I will have to go for USB version of mini DAC which is 200 $ more, which may be not necessary. But if I think that it will work with non-USB version and will not work in the end, it would be crazy to have high-end DA and not being able to use it for CD or iTunes listening. Even Digidesign is not sure about it ...
A real advice and expereince appreciated ...

I dont know if you would consider this a real reply or not, but I cant see how you could get Soundmanager output to analogue 3-8 even.

One could imagine an ASIO compliant CD player program that had a ouput selector built in, like f.ex Reason has. But I dont think I’ve ever heard of it.

In Mac OS sound dialog I don't choose Analog 1-2 or so, but Digi 001 ... It worked well when I had an amplifier connected to 1-2 output or now Genelecs connected to monitor output. But who can say whether it will work if monitors are connected via optical out ...
Better maybe go for a USB version and then be able to use it with PowerBook too ...
