Ff mpeg is the fastest converter you can use. I convert 44 min h264 videos to pro res in 5 min.

+1 on ffmpeg and speed. Using it with a GUI is a great help.
I am always amazed at how slow MPEGstreamclip or QT are compared to it, but it may have to do with multiple processor usage etc.

How can you install ffmpeg on 10.10? Do you have to compile yourself? What gui do you use?

Over the years I used pretty much all the converter apps around.
I found pavtube to be the most reliable when it comes to getting out of sticky situations.
When QT7 Pro and Mpeg streamclip can't cope with codecs burnt in by clueless Editor outputs from Premiere etc., Pavtube will come to rescue 100% of the time. And it can rip Blurays with Discrete BWavs.
Well worth the $35!

+1 for ffmpeg
I not only use it to convert videos, but also to extract audio channels, layback audio to video, make a quick screener dvd with watermark, burn-in timecode or subtitles, downmix audio, etc..
It even plays and converts (unencrypted) DCPs
The possibilities are endless.

You can use pre-compiled binary http://ffmpegmac.net/.
I use macports for tools i run from terminal but you'll need to install Xcode etc. so it's not a super quick install.

For GUI's there are some options like iFFMpeg (~18$, tree trial version), Datura or this one reads interesting Hybrid, seems to come with a bunch of tools (including ffmpeg) included.

I use Homebrew as a package manager on mac, like macports.

Install Xcode tools, download from app store...
Install Homebrew, (from Terminal) then..

brew install ffmpeg

also, you can install ffmbc too (more directed post production version of ffmpeg)

brew install ffmbc
