How would the plugins run on DigiCo consoles if not on some kind of DSP, tell me that? No. Because of no DSP onboard, Waves needs external DSP box they call SoundGrid and that's their solution. Any plugin needs DSP somewhere, whether it is inside a live console, hosted on external box, inside host computer.

IF...

just imagine DigiCo had onboard programmable DSP it would have meant Waves was willing to code proprietary plugins just for DigiCo hardware instead of AAXDSP, which would be studio and live sound at once (like Sonnox has done). Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that requires a SG box a.k.a. Waves DSP box to happen.

These are all choices made by marketing departments and while Waves and Avid have been battling they both have been losing market for UAD

I can't imagine it was a very easy decision.

Pissed at Waves and Avid for not making AAX-DSP work - yes. Done with Waves - no. I still rely heavily on Waves Plug-ins. They just don't work as smoothly as native as they did TDM.

If I'm remembering correctly(this was a while back), at the time, the digico boards had full integration with Waves Soundgrid, as in you didn't need an external computer to control the plugins as you had to with other digital consoles. By not releasing AAX-DSP plugins, they, at least at the time, removed that integration for newer Avid consoles that were based on AAX-DSP instead of the TDM dsp.

This all happened shortly after digico/waves partnered or merged, which is part of what supported the rumor that this choice was made as a power play to boost sales of Digico consoles at the expense of Avid consoles, which did hurt Avid but backfired at Waves.

But this is all speculation, anyone who knows the real reason is surely bound by an NDA and can't let us know.

Not disagreeing necessarily but point, i don't believe any corp will let the marketing dept have the say on this kind of decision. More likely the board or vice president of product development after lengthy round and round with the finance people-accountants run companies for the most part, not their ad arm.

I have been using Logic a lot lately. The past few days I've been working in Pro Tools 2018.12. I have to say it's a lot more unstable than Logic. Repeatable stuff. They really need this to be a good fix. It's time.
