It's for things like this I made up a bunch of decoupling rack mounts for all my rack gear. Isolates the gear from the rack and each other. Not perfect but a hell of a lot quieter. |

I'd be worried about the mechanical stresses placed on the cpu & heatsink assembly connection to the motherboard when in that position long term. I know people have mounted them on their sides in racks but still........ |

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
Why? Cheesegrater on its side means motherboard is on its natural orientation which also means cpu heat naturally rises up and the cpu fan also should run with less mechanical stress.

My bad - I should have said the tray everything sits on and not the motherboard.

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
No worries. I'm confident they have designed the box to sit on either orientation.

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
I have an Isobox with the slide-out tray that the Mac sits sideways on. This gives me room above for my 192s and it's easy to slide the Mac out to work on and slide it back in when done. Seems to run very quiet on it's side even with the Isobox door open.

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
Humm I might have to try a horizontal situation Because as it stands now I may have to construct and ISO box. Currently I do use some free standing 4 " thick 2 ft. X 4 ft. " broadband absorber panels I place in front of the computer, between it and my mic position, but am not certain that will suffice, as I have not done any recording yet.

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
I own a Sound Construction Isobox. Very expensive though. New around $2500 with Mac tray and table top, if you go that route. But, you can now find them used for around $600. Still expensive, but it monitors the temperature and turns on fans as needed, temperature readout screen, alarm if it gets too hot, etc...
https://www.rspeaudio.com/Sound-Cons...cn-isbx-20.htm Here are some pics showing different size boxes with the Mac tray. Both those pics are without the table top option though.
