I dont know what it stands for, but i know some stuff about it.

THX is not a sound format, it is a standard for sound formats. As a matter of fact the THX standard has lowered itself as of lately, to the point in many situations it doesnt mean what it used to. THX now has different levels of classification now instead of the pass fail THX certification in theatres as of a couple of years ago.

Any sound format can be thx certified if it meets the requirements. DTS (digital theatre sound), dobly (5.1 6.1 7.1 etc) and now even computer games. Its a standard where the sound setup meets the surround standard. Meaning correct speaker placement, delay timings, i think db and other specs. Now with the different Cert levels of THX most anything can adhere to some form of THX standard, even 100 dollar set of computer speakers.

THX Homepage

What does THX stand for? THX is a reference to Mr. Lucas's ground breaking film THX-1138 (also the name of the main character). I believe the only reason there is a connection is that THX quality sound is a breakthrough and so was his movie. Other than that I don't know.

As far as THX itself. it is merely a quality standard. Read the site for details.

THX = Tomlinson Holman Experience.

Tom Holman is the guy that actually invented it for Lucas. Now hes is the cheif of Surround Professional magazine. His latest creation is 10.2 surround.

THX never meant squat, it's just Lucas making money off his credibility. Sure some of the guidelines are helpful if you're an amateur sound system installer, but some of them are downright silly, as in Lucas gets paid to require certain parts to meet THX standards - type of screw used to hold speakers to walls for example. I think it's hilarious that they required Bryston to modify their amp designs for THX certification when Bryston practically pioneered the optimal power amp for theaters. I consider that proof that they just look at a product's design and require arbitrary mods just to make themselves look better. I've never heard of a product getting THX cert as-is. At the same time THX is by no means a guarantee of good performance either. THX-certified computer speakers... gimme a break.

If I ran a theater and had installed the gear myself, I'd be tempted to advertise it as "better than THX" and dare them to come prove me wrong.

Well that might explain why it's degraded further.
