Pro-tools-expert has an article about installing a PCI thunderbolt card in a chessegrater. There's an extra step of booting into Windows first to activate the card, then soft booting into MacOS. Then you can run thunderbolt peripherals. I have a 2009 12 core 3.46 & am looking into doing just this myself....

This is a kludge at best and from what I understand doesn't always work as it should. Plus it means you have to pollute your Mac with Windoze

that is a 10 year old computer dude!!!!!

save your pennies or use a CC and at least buy a new or recent MINI.

If the Mac mini is anything similar to my new 6 core MacBook Pro, I would take the 2010 Mac Pro any day of the week. I basically spent 8 times more money on a brand new computer that still doesn't quite do audio production as well as a 10 year old machine.

The 12 core 5,1 is a great choice, High Sierra, Ultimate 2018.7

Running two HDX cards, a USB3 card, for external drives (this is superb) The firewire bus, runs UAD exclusively... it's a total beast!

Without HDX cards, you'll get the equivalent power of two HDX cards, with the 12 core CPU.

I was originally running a Native card, but trouble shooting with CPU spikes (now fixed) led me down this path, but Im really happy tracking into a busy session with HDX, this is where it comes into it's own.

I'll be interested to know how the mini works out with protools!
Good luck!
