Glitches in audio after recording
This is a new issue that has started after upgrading to PT 7.4/7.4cs1. During recording, audio sounds fine but upon playback, gltches sometimes appear in the audio (zooming in on the waveform also shows the glitches and spikes). It sounds very similar to a clocking issue, except that here, I have only one 192IO and it is clocked internally. The ticks vary in amplitude but at times seem evenly spaced with no relation to the session tempo and if I immediately re-record the section, I get a clean recording. The problem is sporadic and unpredicatable but once it starts it tends to happen more frequently. No other sync or digital devices are being used. I've run DigiTest on both my core and accel card (both passed). I've also checked and re-checked cabling to make sure my 192IO connection to my core card is secure.
I realize that this may be a hardware issue but thought I'd share my experience here to see if anyone has seen anything like this. Thanks all, Ben WinXP Pro SP2 HD2 Accel PT 7.4cs1 192 IO (w/ extra AD card)

Re: Glitches in audio after recording
Did some more investigating with this...
On one of the sessions I experienced this in, I noticed the glitches appear very close to the bar lines on the grid (but not exactly on, there is a bit of drift). I also noticed that there are very similar glitches (at the same times) on an alternate take on the smae tracks (mutitracked drums, in this case). I don't see how this could happen unless it was witin the PT hardware/software environment. Digi, any thing else I can do to test my hardware? Ben

Re: Glitches in audio after recording
Sorry for resurrecting this about a year later, and sorry for the long post coming....
I just developed the same problem. I've been using an HD1 and recently changed a motherboard to accommodate another Accel card on it's way. I haven't installed the card yet, so it's still HD1. I noticed this because a regular client I've had for years came in for a regular session, first one on this new mobo. He's a classical guitarist. Comes in, plays for about an hour or 2 non-stop while i'm just recording and taking notes. Always rolling and not stopping record unless he needs a break. Everything went fine. He left and was to come back the next day after I compiled a CD of takes and versions. While I was prepping the CD, I noticed after about 30 min of recording, glitches appeared in the recording, viewable in the waveforms, that were DEFINITELY not audible while tracking and monitoring the recording. I've done several tests, driver updates, drive swaps, HD card slot swaps, bios updates, overclock, underclock, etc, and can't track it down. The glitches appear after some time, between 20min to an hour of constant recording, and are then consistently appearing a little more than every second. Everytime they are not audible while tracking, but definitely afterwards in playback, and viewable in the waveforms. The tests I've been doing have been a signal generator on an Aux track, bussed out to an audio track bus input and recording various numbers of tracks. The motherboard is an Asus P5QL-E, Intel Q6600, 4GB DDR2 1066, P43 chipset, ICH10R, HD1 Accel PCIe, 192io. Here's the kicker, I ran the test in Nuendo 3 that's installed on this machine also, using the Digi ASIO driver and it was perfectly glitch free..... The previous system did not have this problem since the client I noticed this with has been coming in for years, several sessions a month, and this has not happened. I belive it's something in how the HD card is interacting with the SATA bus in how the data is getting written to the drive. Anyhow, any ideas anyone? I have a new mobo on order - an Asus P5Q that has the P45 chipset and is supposedly a bit more robust. We'll see how that goes.... Thanks in advance for any insight. Peace, Ryan |

Re: Glitches in audio after recording
Please post a Sandra report, per the info in the General Troubleshooting thread, so we can see exactly what we're working with. You may also want to look through that thread to see if any of the optimizations/troubleshooting may help you.

Re: Glitches in audio after recording
I can send more of the report, I suppose that's enough for now.
Also, I did try the HD Core card in each of the 2 PCIe slots with the same result. Also, I'm on 7.4cs8 (says cs7) I did have 3x UAD-1 cards in the PCI slots, but I removed those for testing and haven't put them back yet. The results were the same with or without the UAD cards. I tried standard SATA mode and AHCI for the drives. Same result for each. Thanks, Ryan |

Re: Glitches in audio after recording
Bump and update:
New motherboard - ASUS P5Q. Similar specs but P45 chipset instead of the P43. Still the same issues. Tried recording 32 tracks and 96k - same problem. 32 tracks at 48k = same problem, but longer between glitches - a little more than 2 secs between each glitch. It always starts glitching at different times, but once it starts it continues until the end. Sometimes it takes 45 min of recording to start glitching, sometimes 2 minutes. Also, this mobo has an additional SATA port on a Marvell/Silicon Image chip, but it is basically a raid only port. I did try it there to see what happens. It did start glitching after 4 or 5 minutes, but the whole system froze up after 70 min of recording on the drive attached to that port. hmmmm.... -Ryan |

Re: Glitches in audio after recording
Hey Ryan, Sorry to hear about the troubles.
I experienced clicks, pops, and crackles with glitches and it turned out to be a bad A/D expansion card in my 192. Also I have had a hell of a time with my HD2 and my asus/quad core combo...ghosts in the machine for sure. Try some of these: 1. if you can, try moving the core card to a different slot. 2. go into your system preferences, harware, and disable parts of your system you arent using like extra usb, sata, firewire, network ports. (you're trying to free up IRQs) try and get it slimmed down to rediculous perportions and then add them back in until it errors again. (if it helped in the first place) good luck! Justin |

Re: Glitches in audio after recording
Thanks Abomb97.
I'll try getting rid of everything next. I did a fresh install of windows, then PT 7.4 and tried with nothing else installed and the problem is still there. I just did a new test. I attached an IDE drive to the PATA port and tried that and it went for 30 min without any glitches. I'm currently doing that test again for longer period -hour and a half or so- to see how it works out. If this test works fine, then it seems to be isolated to drives on the SATA ports only. Just to clarify, this isn't an issues with regular cracks and pops from faulty digital i/o or clocking issues, etc. Once it begins glitching, the timing of the glitches is consistent. Sounds like a little "pop" repeating, like a bad edit at the top of a repeating loop. I think it's related to buffers and writing chunks of data to the drive. Also, it is NOT present while monitoring the recording in progress. But after stopping record and playing back the sine wave tones that were recorded, it's there. Thanks again! Peace, Ryan |

Re: Glitches in audio after recording
Just ran across your posts here. I haven't seen this issue for a while but I realized I haven't done much recording that required more than 8 tracks of input (been doing overdubs, editing and mixing lately). The comment about the 192 AD expansion card got me thinking as this problem occurred while tracking drums (using more than 8 AD inputs on my 192). Perhaps it is a fault with the 192 AD expansion card, or at the very least a bad connection between the add-in card and the 192IO? Maybe some contact cleaner on the exp card would be something to try?
