Default PT10/PT12 conflict issue?

Hi all,

Running PT12.5.0 (soon to update to 5.2), PT 10.3.10. Macbook Pro Retina 2013, using HD native (via TB chassis), UAD Apollo twin and native macbook audio (ie I switch depending on where I am and what I'm doing). OS 10.8.5, lots of 3rd party plugins (Waves/Soundtoys/Slate/Izotope/UAD etc).

I'm having a weird issue where PT10 hangs on loading plugins. Starts off with Lo-fi, then if you remove lo-fi from the folder, it gets a bit further on, then stops on another, and so on. Eventually I manage to boot PT. Putting plugins back in the folder...and it's fine. This has happened twice; last time it booted, I was ok and so I carried on, until it happened again the other day.

I THINK it's the booting of PT12 in-between times (I've mainly been using 12 on my laptop, only using 10 for compatibility with the studio TDM system, anything I've been able to use 12 for start to finish I've kept on the laptop) so I can't be 100% sure without more experimenting (which I've not yet had time to do) what is causing it.

Was wondering if anyone else is switching between the 2 with no issues?

Thanks!

This is a known issue with 10 due to its inability to access enough RAM to scan all plugins.

Here's a thread about it.

Is this what you're experiencing?

No it's not.

I'm very aware of the out of memory plugin scanning issue, and I get that every time I switch from HD native to coreaudio and back again - annoying but just something to deal with. This is different - there's no error message, it simply freezes and requires a force quit.

I'm hoping next time I try, I'll be able to just remove all plugins, make it boot, then replace them all and have it work again. We'll see.

It could also be due to the fact that PT12.5 and up are not supported in OSX 10.8.5. That version of ML is only good to PT12.4 and lower.

I recommend 100% uninstalling all traces of PT 10 and 12 not only using the uninstallers, but then sifting through all known locations for prefs, plugins, leftovers in the main System, Library, and Applications folders, Pro Tools' folder in the User's Documents folder, etc etc.
Then starting from scratch by first installing PT 10.3.10 and all plugins. THEN PT 12 afterwards. I did this and got everything working a heck of a lot better. YMMV

Problem with the Mac version is Avid's PT10 uninstaller doesn't work in Mavericks and above and starting with PT11 Avid doesn't even provide an uninstaller.

Yes. Avid has made clean installing very difficult to achieve. I think it causes lots of the problems that people are experiencing. Something gets left behind and most of us don't know where to begin the search. If you're lucky enough to have a report read by tech support then they find some issues. But not all... And not all of us get any of those reports addressed.

Not to leave Apple out of this...

I have a new cylinder mac with a SSD. In the old days, I used to just spend $80 on a new drive and keep the old one just in case. That's a little hard to accomplish in the new world...

Hmm. Didn't know that. Typical Avid. Ironically PT12 is the one that's behaving!
