Default 5.1 software on a PT\'s 3 system?

I just recieved a Project III PCI system. a disk i/o, a dsp card, and an old 888 (16bit).

would I just be better off using my digi001 system? I'll have to buy software for the project system so I am wondering if it'll be worth it. plus the analog i/o on the 888 is only 16 bit. I do have a 24bit spdif converter but I'm thinking it's just gonna be more trouble than it's worth.

I was kinda hoping to just use this tdm system to run beat detective to clean up drum tracks but I guess beat detective is PT's 6 only? and PT's 6 wont run with a project card?

can anyone confirm this or suggest what i should do with this stuff? if it did 32 tracks i'd be Ok but 16 tracks is very limiting.

and can I run another 888 and mix on a console?

I believe that beat detective came in with PT v. 5.0, which I do not think will run on PTIII. I think you need a MIX card, in short, to run beat detective. That said, there are numerous great things about the TDM platform.....but you give up a lot when you go back ten years or so, in software terms......which is what you will be doing if you go PTIII. Why not cough up the 1500 for a MIX core? You can use the 888/16 with that. I do. Use your 001 for tracking if you think the 24 bits is a big deal, then open up the sessions in TDM for editing.

PT III uses 5.0.1, however, I believe Beat Detective was first offered in 5.1. Also, I think you voice count is only 32 voices (with the basic configuration), so it sounds like you're better off with the 001.

How are things Seek?

I found these this on it...
http://www.digidesign.com/compato/pt3/

I guess a PT3 system CAN run 5.01 software. it doesnt say 5.1 which ALL my sessions are.

if Beat Detective IS in 5.01 then this is gonna work PERFECT. Can anyone confirm?

Hey digi.

I didn't see your post.

so the question is.. can it run 5.1 then.

figures i would make this impossible.

Not trying to mix with it.. just want it to use the TCE tool and beat detective. if it was 5.1 I'd have total compatibilty.

oh well, if nothing else I'll hook up a A/D to the 888 and use it for mixdown. digital i/o should be 24bit.

or I could trade up.

Nah.

I'll check my 5.1 manual for compatibility with pt3.

No, it will only run up to 5.0.1

FWIW, PT LE 6.1 has the TCE tool.

Beat Detective didn't show up until 5.1.
While Le does not compete well with some later TDM systems against the PIII it probably a better choice especially if you upgrade your front-end with converters and pres.
PT 6.1 has closed the software gap but the hardware difference has increased because of the HD/HD Accel.
Since you have the PIII system it might not be a bad idea just to try it out, this might help:

yeah. I dont know if I'm gonna even use it if I got to run 5.0.

Oh well.

thanks for the tip on 5.0 on ebay

yeah. I do a lot of editing in osx/pt's 6. the beat detective would have been cool.
