Default Just finished my biggest project ever: National airing Tonight!

If you get a chance, set your VCR's to record the History Channel on the 17th through the 20th of June at 9:00pm eastern time. It's called "Mouthpiece, Voice for the Accused". A four part mini series documentary about famous criminal defense attorneys' and their stories about how they represented infamous mob figures spanning about seven decades. Each show features one attorney and is an hour long.

All the music, scoring and sound design was done by myself as well as the entire audio mix and mastering for all four programs. All done here at my home project studio; Completely done within PTLE 6 - 001

About eight months to write and score (about 75 original cues total).
About two weeks to complete the final audio mix for the four programs.

Here is list of most of the gear used to put it all together:

MDD Dual-1.25 FW800 / 512MB ram
OS10.2.6
PTLE 6.0.1cs1 - DIGI 001
Waves NPP - ver. 4
Stock internal 80GB HD
OWC Firewire Elite Pro 100GB Audio HD

Console:
Mackie 1604 VLZ Pro

Video and Sync:
UVW1800 BETACAM sp Video Deck
Horita blackburst generator
Motu Digital Timepiece

Instruments:
*E-Mu E-synth Rack Sampler
*Rolland A-90ex (Piano-Keyboard controller)
*Korg NS5R Sound Modual

Active Monitors:
Genelec 1030A

Below, is a typical audio mix session set up in PTLE6:

16bit x 48khz

3 stereo L1 (1 is maximizer on the mix bus)
3 mono L1
3 stereo TrueVerb
1 stereo Q10
1 stereo Q6
2 stereo Q4
2 mono Q4
2 stereo Q3
3 stereo C1 comp/gate, look ahead enabled
1 stereo Super Tap delay

(No outboard processing was used at all)

21 RTAS plug-ins total (Waves only, no Digirack)

32 active audio tracks
10 inactive audio tracks
6 stereo AUX returns
42 sends
Heavy Automation

*Side note about average system load on heaviest sessions:
--CPU meter up to aprox. 3/4; Screen redraw totally unaffected. Snappy...

This is the single largest undertaking I have completed to date and is a testament to the capabilities of the PTLE system.

Enjoy! Comments and/or critiques about any aspect of this project welcome. I'll bump this up again on air date...

dkrz, bump this up on the 17th as a reminder? I'll look forward to it. Congratulations, it sounds like quite an accomplishment! And I'm glad, in the end, that your setup (very similar to mine) with PTLE6 was up to the task.

dkrz, thank you so much for sharing this info!

For a student like myself just beginning to understand this field (and learn Pro Tools), its wonderful to have someone share an insight like this.

I'll definitely be checking out the show!

Congratulations, that's a very impressive gig to pick up! Did client supply everything on beta or Quicktime? Did you work with digital picture at all or just trigger PT with the beta deck? I'm also very curious as to how you have set up your Digital Timpiece/UVW 1800 with midi machine control. I'm trying a very similar setup, and while I can get Clockworks to eject the beta tape, I cannot get it to play the machine. Thanks.

i love the history channel...they do great work and i am sure you do also..congrats...

i have a question about your timecode...i know LE does not have proper timcode...

how did you chase or lock or import your video?

i have a Unitor8 mkII and pro tools will not see the timecode from it...logic sees it very very fast but pro tools nothing...

are you using digital timepiece and is pro tools seeing that Mtc or Ltc???

can you email me a phone number, i would love to know your setup...i am in los angeles...

peace john

Congrats to you!

You must feel great to have completed such a large project on your own.

Question: Did you charge a day rate for each day on the project or did you do the job for a flat fee?

I will definitely watch for the program. I enjoy the history channel very much and your show sounds like something that I would be interested in watching.

Again, congratulations to you

Hey, thanks for all the interest! Just got back from work. I'll post more details about how the whole Betacam lock and chase works tomorrow and try to answer all the questions.
