Default Specific Mic Pre Question

Shopping for a new 2 channel mic pre. I'm recording into a Masterlink from a stereo mic mostly doing piano, and classical stuff. Anyway, just wondering if anyone would have an opinion of the Great River MP-2 vs the Earthworks 1022. I know it's probably a long shot but if anyone's had a chance to compare or has another recommendation I'd be grateful.

I haven't used either of those personally. But I would suggest you look into the possibility of the Grace 201. IMHO the Grace pre's are the best for accurate, clear recording. Used with DPA mics these pre's are just stunning.

If the 201 is too much $$s, you may want to consider two 101's, they are also really darn good, most of the difference between the two are the PSU type and voltage, and the DB steps on the gain knob.

Hi Jamble,

I have the Great River MP-2MH, so I have the balanced AND unbalanced outs. They are very very good and slightly more versatile than the Earthworks (which is also first class).

The only observation I could give is that the Earthworks are a little drier (with a tiny amount of "flab") while the GR MP-2 have a little more "bloom" (which can sometimes be a handful if you're hoping for discreet, in which case use a Grace or something). YMMV, my opinion only.

Best regards,

Haigbabe

a great compromise (and i do mean VERY great) between the "colourful" mp2-nv & the clean & transparent 1024, would be phoenix audio's drs-2. the guy who makes it has been THE neve specialist worldwide for 30 years. the drs-2 costs exactly the same as the g'river, but only uses a transformer on the output (the mp2-nv has one on the input as well), & is capable of providing clean & accurate, as well as fat & warm. this is one very great mic pre; you wouldn't be sorry.

from your post, this seems like it would fit yer bill. good luck.

btw, the drs-2 absolutely kills for piano!!!

One of the greatest secrets in the preamp world is: www.dacs-audio.com... Many say that this is one of the finest preamps ever made. I have one and I must only agree with it, it is simply stunning ... I did A/B with Millenia H3 V and soundwise Millenia was a class lower in this direct comparison. Price ? 995 GBP ...
