Default Goldpoint attenuator anybody?

Hi everybody,

Anybody got the Goldpoint attenuator and could tell whether crackling in the speakers was normal when turning the volume knob?

A friend just bought that thing and is wondering now whether he should exchange the item as defect or better forget about the model at all.

Thanky!

Lalaman

Based on stuff i read on the website for the SCA N72 preamp wich also uses a step-attenuator much like this goldpoint thing, only then for selecting microphone input levels some crackling is unavoidable due to the way it works. It is a switch. Although you/they can soften the "blow" with a capacitor, a capacitor isnt something you like in your audiopath, so i wouldnt be suprised if they didnt add one. SO maybe you just have to learn to live with it.

On the other hand...i could be talking utter bull*****. If so...sombody please correct me.

The Goldpoint site also mentions switching noise in some applications, so I'd say it's normal.

Thread hijack here...
Bastiaan - did you completely finish your N72 project? Do you love them?

Teleplayer,

Yes i finished the SCA N72, and loving the sound is an understatement. It totally smokes the standard pre's on a 002R and definitely smokes a 001's pre's and also the pre's of my swissonic AD8. The souns is warmer, fuller, more air etc etc etc......

Tim has a killer product here. I may be ordering api-style pre's with him one day, but now i have to take it easy. Funds are kinda low......

2 pictures of my box....i have to warn you...it aint pretty (my metalworkingskills are next to nothing.... )

Front
Back

And mine is running on replacement parts for neve stuff from Sowter. So it could have a different sound as the Carnhill stuff but i really really like it. And having built your own preamp is kinda cool. And for that purpose the ugly box helps....

My 7th Circle box has two J99, one N72, two A12 (well, the second A12 will be installed soon, I haven't built it yet, but it's real easy.) They are all great preamps.

Even assembled, they are an excellent value. More people here should buy them.

I couldn't agree more! Keep in mind that SCA (seventh circle audio) has a forum online not unlike he DUC where the guy that created the kits regularly writes about his kits. Get a kit and you'll not be alone. And the quality of the PCB is excellent. If you are comfortable soldering together your own cables this is definitely something interesting. Get a Neve 1272 clone for the price of an ART something.

Thanks guys,

I had told him already about switches and dampening, but he wanted to make sure in particular how this very box ought to behave. When you say noise is mentioned on the website then I guess that´s indeed how it is designed to be.
He´ll be reading this thread.

Thanks again!

Its a trade-off. Either you get continues selectable volumes with a normal potmeter, but also the risc of signaldegradation and crackling when turning the pot, or you get the switched kind wich works with some steps, and makes popping noises when turned, but NO signal degradation due to the carbon contacts etc etc....
