sure, but these are front to back... the new cheesegrater in rack-mounted position would require ventilation from side to side

The ventilation holes are front to back; if you want to evacuate the hot air coming out the back you would want a blower like I linked to. Side-to-side would marginally cool the outer case. Unless Apple put a fan on the side of the case.

A lot of this is speculation based on what we're seeing because as I mentioned I think there's two different casings going on - desktop and rackmount.

Just watched the rollout video...the VERY noticible GROAN from the audience when the presenter said the STAND COST $999 threw him off script.

Now why would that happen? Was the Kool Aid tasting a tad bitter?

ROFLMAO!

That's exactly the case (pun intended). The new cheesegrater fits to 19" rack so that the top would be rack front, which means rack sides are the cheesegrater front and back. As in cheesegrater back-to-front airflow goes side-to-side when rackmounted.

Yes, it will be rack mountable . . !
I just spotted this
"For customers who want to rack mount their Mac Pro in edit bays or machine rooms, an optimised version for rack mounting will be available this fall."

Microsoft, Dell and HP wish to thank Apple from the bottom of their bottom lines for increasing their profits and market share.

$999 for a MONITOR STAND? You know its Apple when your monitor can cost more than your new Mac.

ROFLMAO!

Still using my 5,1 cheese grater after almost 10 years. Probably will get one of these new ones in a year or so and keep that one into retirement.

And you get this how? Doesn't look like that in the presentation picture shown here. They show holes in the front of the chassis.
