Listening to plugin when PT is only record enabled.
Hello Community !
I have been away from PT for quite some time as I was sick for a while. Am now returning and have what will probably appear to be an ultra basic question so I apologize in advance for that. I have some hearing issues. My equipment is solely for the purpose of recording a grand piano. Because of my hearing problems I would like to be able to wear my headphones when playing the piano and I would also like to use an equalizer to adjust different spectrum of the piano. I have a set of Bose noise cancelling headphones that would be great for this. Would someone please tell me again how I can insert a EQ plugin, put PT in record enable, and be able to use the EQ while playing and listening through headphones. I seem to remember that "automation" might be the way.... Thanks! Dan

Re: Listening to plugin when PT is only record enabled.
If you want to monitor your signal after plugin processing you'll need to make sure "Low Latency Monitoring" is disabled (Options Menu) and then set your playback engine buffer to something low like, 64 samples (the lowest setting your computer will tolerate).

Re: Listening to plugin when PT is only record enabled.
You will need an aux track to put your eq on. Then send it out a bus to your record track. If you just put the eq on the record track, you will monitor through it but not record it.

Re: Listening to plugin when PT is only record enabled.
This is going the long way around as there is no reason to record the EQ. Just insert the EQ plugin on your piano track and set buffer to 64. Plugins on audio tracks affect the sound AFTER it is recorded(so plugins don't change the recording, only what you hear). As said, LLM(Low Latency Monitoring) needs to be OFF(when its ON, plugins and sends are bypassed on any record-enabled tracks). Once you finish recording, feel free to change or remove the EQ plugin(and try to avoid plugins that have lots of latency while recording). Many EQ plugins have none(and the stock EQ III is a solid plugin). But some(like Waves Puigtech or any "linear phase" EQ is likely to have some or a lot of latency. Choose wisely and all will be good

Re: Listening to plugin when PT is only record enabled.
Kyle, PTLancek and Dave,
In your explanations are you saying that I can do this as you describe and that I do not need to be recording? So, I can use the EQ plugin to listen to the track only when the track is record enabled and not actually recording? Thank you all for your help. I will try everything you all mentioned. Thanks again, Dan

Re: Listening to plugin when PT is only record enabled.
Click the "I" button on the track to listen without record enabling. "I" stands for Input Monitoring. Otherwise, everything else posted applies.
