Default Quicktime through Mojo looking really bad?

Hi!

I've been running my video in PT via the Mojo (not the SDI version) lately, and I just can't seem to get a good quality picture when outputting a quicktime movie. Running MXF files directly recorded into PT from tape looks stunning, but no matter how high a resolution I have on my quicktimes, they just come out as a jaggy mess on my screen. This is unfortunate, since 9 times out of 10, a quicktime is what I get to work with and that is what my clients want to see in good shape.

Is anybody out there running quicktimes through the Mojo and getting good results? I can't find anyone else complaining about it, which leads me to believe/hope that I'm doing something wrong.

Thanks!
Erik

Erik,

Are you blowing it up on a screen via projection, or on a monitor?

Do you have to have the "High Quality Quicktime Image" selected in the operations prefs for MOJO QT playback? Could be that.

Minister, that was indeed the trick! I found the option myself shortly after posting. I thought I had checked all the options, but I missed that one apparently. Strange that it seems to be unchecked by default.

Thanks a lot for your input, appreciate it!

Hey Tom. I don't seem to have the MOJO QT playback option. Are you talking about the Quicktime Playback Priority? If not, where are the operations prefs for MOJO QT playback?

Hi Rick,

No, not priority.

Setup/Preferences.../operation tab/video [box] - check the box for High Quality QuickTime Image.

Very odd. I don't have that option available. Under my prefs/operation/video..the only choices I have are Quicktime Playback Priority (Normal, Medium and Highest) and two check boxes for Avid Video Errors Stop Playback and Avid Video NTSC Has Setup (NTSC-J).

I'm running Mac PPC OS 10.4.11 and PT 7.2. Mojo works just fine, but I've never seen the option you mention anywhere. Is this a PC thing?

oh, I don't remember where it is in 7.2, I am on 7.3. You'll have to consult the manual.

That was added in v7.3.

I'm curious what codec your video is using when it's jaggy looking if you don't have HQ QT playback enabled. Possibly H.264? Does it get better if you use Motion JPEG?

Completely understand if you don't have time to test it - on my machine, H.264 and other 'high compression/long GOP' videos tend to look worse than others when HQ QT playback isn't enabled.
