Re: First experience with NVMe M.2 in enclosure - bad.
Brilliant advice. Scanning your firmware post, the scenario that may work best for me is a few X5 or T5/T7 drives connected to this small OWC 1x3 TB Hub. Our household is all Apple by choice and I have been downsizing so want to avoid adding Windows SW/HW for firmware management; a few years ago this would have been fine.
If OWC supports smart energy management with TB (or USB) externals similar to the Sonnet PCIe chassis, then I can build a very compact storage subsystem - cables well hidden, single mac connection, single power supply. I also like the ease of swapping volumes if one fails or technology changes. Thanks again, Sky

Re: First experience with NVMe M.2 in enclosure - bad.
X5 are pretty dead, they were overpriced Thunderbolt drives with not great thermals. I still have one, but the M.2 drives in the Sonnet chassis are much better for me, better cooling and not prone to as easy disconnection/cable hassles. The benefits of the chassis are why we are here in this thread. If you want small/portable/utility USB drives then the T7 or T9 are great.
(And it's a M2 Mac here, but other folks should be aware of M1 Macs with USB 3.x performance problems on Thunderbolt ports. https://eclecticlight.co/2022/04/18/...-usb-3-1-gen-2). |
