Default i7 MAC MINI or IMAC i7

Hello all. I have been making wonderful music on my Super Loaded Mac Mini
i7 3.0 Ghz 16 gigs of ram 1 TB SSD DRIVE DUO CORE

However, I am finding I have to run at 1024 in Protools and Logic having all the VI and plugs I am using.

I initially before getting this custom made Mini, tried the Imac i7 Quad 4.0 32 gigs of ram and had nothing but problems with Protools. PROBLEMS. I went through 4 separate Imacs before i said W()@#$)(*@#$@#$)(@#$@#)($* IT!

Got the mac mini and it worked instantly.

I have another Imac coming again to try my hell out. I enjoy trying the 14 day return policy of Apple no questions asked.

So I have coming the latest Imac

• 4.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.2GHz
• 32GB 1867MHz DDR3 SDRAM - four 8GB
• 1TB Flash Storage
• AMD Radeon R9 M395 with 2GB video memory

My question is this. Are there any people having success with Protools 12.7 HD or any version with this machine and OS? I am attempting to open this can of worms again and hope its not a bloody mess!

Issues I had before was spinning beachball and freezing screen due to GUI issues.

Thanks in advance

Dave

did the imac have a fusion drive?

that will never work.

unless you split them and use the flash portion for the OS only and the rest
as a seperate drive.

I'm using an iMac i7 without problems but I am on PT 12.4 until convinced an upgrade is stable

Default i7 MAC MINI or IMAC i7

Using iMac 4k i7 under 10.12.3 and protools 12.7 Native without a single problem. Composer (sound design) with lots of VIs and guitars/bass, habitually 50/55 tracks.

Which specific iMacs did you try? 14,1 2 3 or 4? What specific Mini do you have?

What problems did you have with the iMacs? I know you said you had the SBBD and screen freezes but those are not due to the computer as much as they are PT. Any other issues? Also what OSX version? Did you try PT11.3.2 on those iMacs and if so how did that work out? If you have a combined PT10/11/12 asset try 11.3.2 on the new machine. I run 11.3.2 on a considerably less well endowed system then you have (see my profile page) and upwards of 20+ instances of Kontakt 5/EWQLSO in Play 5.01 and the system isn't even breathing hard. Two dozen Arturia softsynths - no problem. What I'm getting at is it may not be the iMac at all but PT12 that's the culprit.

Here is a summary of what I used and issues taken from another thread. Thank you for your reply.

Check out this summation...

Using a fresh install right from Avid download page. I am a first time protools user and my experience has been nothing short of tragic.
The reason I switched was because I wanted my studio to just .. work..

It has been 2 months and now 4 iMacs.

3 late 2015 builds.. all the same freezing GUI issue

The late 2014 with 10.10.5 and even 10.11.2 still has the issue. That machine was i7 4.0 32 gigs of ram 1 TB SSD (SHOULD BE SCREAMING FAST)
This is 4 iMacs that have the same problem.

I thought it might be the external monitor that I hooked up.

It happens with just Protools 12.4 or any version of 12 I have tried.
I took everything out of the equation.

I was running the project from an external 7200 drive.
Just running it from the SSD internal. Project is small.. 2 audio tracks and 5 midi tracks.

I just basically had the iMac either or all versions running the session with no peripherals. Problem still happens.
I do have an Apollo 8 Quad hooked in VIA thunderbolt. I even tried a brand new Apollo 8 unit!!!! PROBLEM IS still there!!

I am so frustrated with this. Its an absolutely horrible experience.

Then at the end of it all. I grab my Mac Mini late 2014 i5 2.6 8 gig of ram 1TB 5400 spinner computer and it works perfectly.
No freezing, no problems. This is not even supposed to work with a 5400 drive!

How can a iMac with i7 4.0 32 gigs 1TB SSD freeze and a crap little mac mini play perfectly.
I am wanting to sell it all and just return back to Sonar and a PC.

My last attempt will be another late 2014 Mac Mini from Apple. The i7 3.0 Duo 1TB SSD 16 gigs of ram was recommended to me from Annex Pro.
I would so much prefer a quad core but nothing works!

Beyond frustrated.

Hi,

I have three clients set up with i7 iMacs on PT 12.7.
They all work flawlessly out of the box.
I had a problem with an iMac at home that turned out to be a wonky Tbolt cable that worked fine on anything else.
Tried a different cable and the prob went away.
A failing external drive or faulty external drive enclosure is pretty common too.
When you test them with something else, they always seem to be fine.
