Default Monitor Stands

Hello Folks,

I am working on a new desk for my studio on which I will put the screen and the monitors ... however I have an inquiry ....

How about if I ask the carpenter who is building my desk to put two built in stands on top of my desk made from wood each ... would that be more useful than placing the monitors on separate normal steel stands behind my desk ?

Opinions are much appreciated ....

Cheers

I had to make a similar decision a few years ago. Here's the thread although most of the pics won't show up anymore.

I went with separate metal stands and am VERY happy I did. Having them connected to the desk itself would have limited me way too much.

Nice setup ... but the thing with metal stands is that they can't be at still ....always vibrating ...

Not when they're filled.

These things are VERY well made and heavy duty.

Either way should be okay as long as you have some isolation between the speakers and whatever surface they sit on. Primacoustic Recoils are a good choice Having separate stands would give you more leeway in placement, especially if you change screen setups and it requires the speakers to move to be spaced differently

My genelecs have got the isopods ... so I guess there is some isolation between the the speakers and the surface they are sitting on .. I have no problem in the placement so I guess I'll go with building wood stands built in on the desk since my room is small and each centimetre counts ... :)

I did conduct a google search and one thing I couldn't find an answer and hope someone would answer me is: knowing monitors are at ear level .... is there a minimum height that the monitors should be at from the floor ?

I don't believe it matters. The more important thing will be reflections from nearby walls, or from the desktop(or console if you have one). One easy trick is to grab a small mirror and place it in line between each speaker, and your body in the mix chair. If the mirror(laying flat on any surface) shows you the tweeter as a reflection, you will get audio bouncing and smearing the direct sound. Do the same check at the walls(get a friend to hold/move the mirror) and apply acoustic treatment at any reflection point

I think free stands isolate better but you need to have the space for a good wide foot so they don't tip over so a good iso pad between the speaker and the stand would be nice if/when the stand is attached to the desk
