Hate to be the guy who bumps threads, but has anyone else been experiencing this and/or found a workaround? This makes PT 9.0 unusable!

I had to boot OSX in 32 bit mode and reinstall my 32 bit Apogee drivers. Try holding down the 'n' key while booting PT. This should allow you to choose a audio device without crashing.

The Pro Tools 9 Technical FAQ has some possible solutions.

My Pro Tools 9 starts up just fine - it crashes when I try to select an audio interface other than my ProFire Lightbridge as the playback engine.

My Mac defaults to 32-bit mode and all my audio devices have the latest drivers installed and work fine in other audio software (Cubase, Logic, Live).

Thank you. I read the FAQ in its entirety already but it does not provide a solution to my problem. Seems like a critical bug in the Pro Tools 9 software.

(To be clear, I uninstalled Pro Tools M-Powered 8.0.4 using the provided uninstaller app and installed Pro Tools 9 using the full 4.7GB installer.)

Did you try holding the n key while it boots as suggested?

Carl

I'm having similar issues and i fell ripped off by avid, i bought a presonus firestudio 26 and i bought pro tools 9 and it IMPOSSIBLE to run directly with the presonus, i'm only availaible to run it wth asio4all, and the farthest that i can get is to initialize pro tools, open the session but then there is no playback, it just 'freezes' there. Im so frustated right now :@

Carl - if you read my posts, you will see this is not the solution.

(For the record, if I hold n while Pro Tools launches and get the Playback Engine dialog, selecting an audio interface from the menu crashes Pro Tools just the same.)

It should not make an ounce of a difference though - Avid advertises PT9 as working with any CoreAudio interfafce when it clearly doesn't. Big, big disappointment.
Isn't PT9 limited to 32 I/O? Perhaps that is causing the crash.

Nope. If you have more I/O than PT allows, you use the I/O Setup dialog to select the inputs and outputs you want PT to use. The excess is ignored.

Also, PT always defaults to my ProFire Lightbridge interface which is 34 ins / 36 outs and works just fine - I can play and record audio with no problems.
