Re: should i be recording on my external drive
Record onto your external drive. This is what Digi reccomends.
If you create a session on that drive it should be set-up to record there. You can check however by going into:- Set Ups Menu > Disc Allocation |

External.
When you create a new session in PT it asks you where, that is when you choose which hardrive to put the session on.

Re: should i be recording on my external drive
Actually what Digi recommends is not to record to your system drive (The drive with Protools and your OS on it). Most all G-3's and G-4's are capable of at least one add'l internal drive, which can easily be installed by the end user (that's you) in a few minutes. Apple has step by step instructions online at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=31292
However, running sessions from an external drive (SCSI, FW or USB) is also an option, however, you'll get your best performance (track and plugin count) from an internal drive. It's also important to check disc allocation, and make sure all teh audio files are on the same drive as the session, and preferably in the session folder. This makes for good houskeeping, knowing all the associated files for a particular sesion are all contained within one folder on one drive. While not necessary, it can help when sessions have many audio files, particularly for back up. Hope this is helpful. |

Re: should i be recording on my external drive
Aside from performance issues, the other reason to record on external drives is portability.
I can take my sessions anywhere on my externals and open them on any PT rig, so I don't need to haul the entire studio around!
