Default Glyph Trip or Trip2 for HD 96/192 Recordings

hi

just saw this Trip2 and it looks VERY interesting

http://www.prosoundweb.com/webexpo/aes02/com/bar/daw/

my questions:

1. is it totally safe to record @ 96/192
with FWHD especially this unit (Trip2)
with no problems in track counts etc...?

2. am i better off to get the regular Trip SCSI with 36Gb x2 with a CDRW and a VXA Tape backup?

any tips would be welcome
i pretty much have everything for my studio
except the HD's and the G4.
just want to be 100% that i have a bulletproof
hard disk system.

regards,
CJ

According to Digidesign, you will get a higher track count using SCSI drives (also meaning SCSI can handle more edits). You can also use more drives simultaneously with SCSI. FireWire is certainly cheaper though, and if you don't need everything rack mounted, you will save even more $. As for the CD-R, you will probably be able to use the one built into the G4, unless you need to use Masterlist CD which only supports SCSI CD recorders.

If you want to go full-on for max tracks and space I would suggest the original SCSI Trip with 3 hard drives and one tape backup (preferrably an AIT-2). It might be overkill for you though, since you can still get a lot out of 2 FireWire drives - do a DUC search to see what kind of performance people are getting.

I agree with the above. SCSI will give you the best performance. Check out www.prodigy-pro.com I actually ordered a custom trip from them not too long ago, and they're definitely not kidding when they say they'll beat any advertised price. Shoot'em an email...nice people.

I also dig my scsi drives and having said that I've just sold half of my drives and bays. I picked up the Storecase/Kingston 1U Hotswap fire-wire bay, it rocks. I've done 68 tracks at 96k with "RUDE" edits and it hung. I moved the session to my favorite scsi drive and had 9073 errors every bar.

Besides that it takes up less space in the rack, and has less fan noise than the scsi bays. Now, I use two 120 FW drives, one is the Master and the other is the Back-up. I've had 4 different records on these drives these past two months and I’ve enjoyed not changing drives for each project. “Silverkeeper” (free from Lacie.com) keeps the clone backed up. This has made my day to day upkeep much cleaner for me.

The performance of this Kingston drive maybe due to the fact that they have machined the tray so there is no need for a ribbon cable, it slides right into the connector. My scsi drives are now used to copy new projects on to the fire-wire drives.

I’m not sure about the AIT 2, but the other night I was getting 550 megs per minute with the AIT 3.

Just one guy’s view.

Peace, Brad

thanks c-tone and Ethan

i was kind of leaning to SCSI but
with FW getting better and
the convenience of the Trip2,
it's getting close.

a transitional moment in HD's

the unit i settled on is a SCSI Trip;

(2) 10k Seagate Cheetah Ultra 3 LVD
(1) VXA with 33Gigs tapes
(1) Plextor 36X4X12X CDR

i still have some questions regarding the VXA
but a lot of people think is the perfect medium

is anyone using this tape system (VXA)?
any problems etc...?

thanks,
CJ

Hi,
I think I have the exact solution you are looking for. If you have not purchased it yet I have the exact rig you are looking to buy, for sale.
I have a trip rack with three hot swap drive bays, populated with three Cheetah 9gb drives. The fourth bay is a Plextor 8X cdr with upgraded firmware, and an external scsi VXA tape drive.
This is a rock solid system. Two of the three Cheetahs have almost no hours, and the same goes for the VXA (it has about 4 or 5 hours of use).
Of course the Atto dual uw card is included as are all cables. If you are seriously interested, I will even include retrospect (ver. 4.2 I think?)
All equipment is in great condition and performs flawlessly. I am only selling because we are going to be networking our Avid and PT and require Fibrechannel to do this.
Save yourself some bucks. I am in the NYC area and would love move this rig ASAP. You will be able to pick up this whole rig for under $2000.00
If you'd like, email me at [email protected] or call 914-720-4222
My name is Phil Schiller
Thanks.
