Default Pickup Bar

I have a tune that starts with a pickup bar—in other words exactly one beat of elapsed time, consisting of beat four of an otherwise imaginary measure preceding measrure one.

Do I actually have to start the song with a measure of 1/4, and immediately
insert a 4/4 meter chang in what PT now thinks of as measure
2 of thr timeline?

Please Thank You

My personal preference is to start on beat 4 of measure 1 or 2. This way I have some roll in time built into the session, which is convenient for tracking with a metronome and for printing or bouncing. I absolutely do not want the music to start at “zero” so I can control the amount of silence prior to the start of the final mix.

You can also Renumber Bars from the Event menu so your pick-up note would be in bar 0.

Whatever works for everyone I prefer to leave 2 empty bars of click as a count-in and have music start at bar 3 One thing I NEVER do is start music at zero(some folks set Wait for Midi Note and start music at zero but I am not a fan of that)

Beat 4 in Bar 0 (0|4|000) You get a 3 count ahead of that. I like 2 empty bars starting at -1.

Hey thanks for the replies! Silence at the top is an excellent point.
