Default I need a rock solid laptop for live shows

So yeah, I need a laptop to play some keyboard and pre-recorded harmonies for my band at live shows so I need a really stable laptop. Is there anyone in particular? Is a powerbook any better when it comes to stability?
Right now we are using a desktop. It's a pain, and not very stable.

I have a powerbook and newer iBook and neither has let me down live. I also have a new Allen-recommended Gateway 7422 Athlon 64 that I just installed a bunch of softsyths, and so far it has been rock solid at the studio (haven't taken it out live yet). Just gotta make sure you keep the operating system, OSX or XP as lean as possible, no extra crap. And read up on all the little suggestions and problems other people have had, things like installing XP as Standard PC (which made my laptop perform much better but made my desktop unstable) and seeing which version of the app you'll use is the most trouble-free.

Default joz,

hello,
although I have never used it with protools, the newest powerbook g4 is a smoker if you get the 2gb ram upgrade. Used it with logic 7.1(cpu HOGG) with impressive results!
Also check out centrinos, A 64's and the "best laptops for LE" thread.

Joz,
I know that you are a Macster already and I haven't found a Windows laptop that has the build quality of the Powerbook yet. Just a matter of price here. If you can swing the Powerbook then I'd go for it. For live recordings it would be hard to beat. For mixing you can always dump it into a desktop with more power.

Allen
