2023.9 Drag'n drop stereo file results in 2 mono tracks
It occured after updating to 2023.9. This is new in 2023.9, never seen it before, haven't touched any setting since the updating from 2023.6. From desktop or clips. Is it a bug or a new feature which you disable/enable anywhere? TI haven't seen such behaviour for years.

Yep, confirmed. As I said, this was not present in 2023.6

This is not a change in 2023.9. I've been busy dragging and dropping stereo tracks into 2023.9 on Mac since the day it was released... if something like this, that is so frequently used, was broken in 2023.9 you would likely have other folks screaming about it on DUC.
This is a perennial issue that comes up every now and again, for example see https://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=369237 or many other threads about this. And if it's a file name or source file format problem and it's behaving incorrectly please file a bug report so it can get fixed.

Lemme guess. Audio files came from Cubase.

No, just plain mp3 or wav. As I said, this was not present in 2023.6.

Some things to try
Create a new macOS admin account. Log into that account. Create a new empty session, repeat the test there. (No need to trash prefs, the new account effectively does that and more). Still problems can you share the file that is causing this behavior? Or make another one? Even if it seems to be every mp3 you have lets exclude that as this behavior in the past is often input file related.
