XMon I/O Routing Question
Dear All,
The output routing layout for XMon is based on a standard 7.1 configuration where L/R stereo channels are sent to outputs 1 and 5 of my 192. XMon being only analog, what happens if I want a simultaneous stereo AES output? I can of course use the built-in output, but the latter only works in pairs (1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, etc.). Is there any patch available to get it to work with channels 1/5? Or do I have to modify the standard I/O setup so that stereo outputs are shifted to 1/2 and all the others follow? Anyone? Many thanks, |

When I work in stereo my output pair is 1/2 and sending out aes through either the aes encl. output pair or to another one of the aes pairs isn't an issue. 7/10 I work in stereo so I went for a patch solution in which outputs 1/2 of the first 192 are normalised with the X mon's inputs 1 and 5. When I do surround I patch the outputs of the 192 from 1 to 6 to the X mon ... skipping inputs 2 and 4 (Lc and Lc) To me this is the most flexible situation. IMO you have to customize the I/O setup in a way that works most conveniently for you and use that one all the time. Or have multiple I/O setups ready depending on what kind you need. All that said ... you mention the aes out work in pairs ... but even that is not a restriction in the I/O setup. You can very well assign the L side of a stereo path to aes out 3 and the R side to say 7. As long as there's no overlapping path PT won't complain. Depending what device you intend to use that aes signal with you of course have a useless I/O setup if the device only accepts a pair, you won't be able to make practical use of it unless you have a device that allows an I/O flexible routing like PT ... TC system 6000 for example.

Re: XMon I/O Routing Question
an often overlooked approach is the Pro Tools multiple output routing feature. Click on the output for your source track while holding the control key (mac) or start key (win) and select your AES routing. Now both the XMon analog stereo sub-path and the AES output are active. (a + sign appears in the output control indicating a multiple output routing has been assigned). The downsides to this are a small DSP hit to spawn a new stereo TDM mixer and of course managing two simultaneous mixes..
Hope this helps! regards, |

Re: XMon I/O Routing Question
Hi,
Many thanks for your kind tip. I have HD3 7.3.1, and although I have tried and tried, there was no way this would work. So I never saw the "+" sign on my master track's output control. My request was just for a simultaneous AES output of the signal that goes to XMon thru channels 1/5 without having to alter your standard routing. (this feature being available in the Hardware Setup but only for paired channels). Unless I have missed something? Many thanks, |
